Mouse Trap Racecar

Second Annual Mouse Trap Racecar Challenge
Build It:
We used 17 dollars making our racecar

Test It:
Our first trial went 25 tiles each being 30 inches which is 750 inches
Our second and third trial both went around 8 meters

Achievements:
"Long Distance Winner"
"Going the Mile"

"Competitor"
"Re-itterate"
I think that would could have a bigger extention tool and use less string

"Game Changer"
Each team has the chance to restring or coil there car and in one trial let the car go twice to see how far you can get it
Or Have a set distance and each team race to it, making them have to coil there car every  time it stops and see who gets to the finish line first

"Leave it cleaner than you found it"

The Deep Dive

1. “From the buildings in which we live and work, to the cars we drive, or the knives and forks with which we eat, everything we use was designed to create some sort of marriage between Form  and function.

2. The folks at IDEO state that they are not experts in any given area. But, they do claim to be experts on the  process in which you design stuff, which they apply to the innovation of consumer products.

3. After the team of designers is brought together, told the problem, and informed they have five days to “pull it off,” what phase of the design process do they immediately engage in?

Define the Problem: They then go in to see what they have to fix to be able to make a cart more acceptable for small children, easier move ability, and capacity for the products,

4. Give two examples of what the team members did during this phase.

a.The teams head off to the grocery store to see actual people try to move the carts, how much they can store in the actual carts, and what children are doing on the carts: hanging, riding, etc..

b.Then they go and talk to the people actual moving the carts to see what they come across in moving and storing the carts, and getting them from the cars to the storing "racks"

5. List five rules-of-thumb that IDEO employees follow when they share ideas during the brainstorming phase:

a.One Conversation at a time

b. Stay focused on the topic

c.Encourage Wild Ideas

d.Defer judgement

e.Build on the ideas of others

6. Why should wild (and sometimes crazy) ideas be entertained during the brainstorming phase?

So that the group isn't coming up with just sane ideas and that some of them are outside the box so that you can improve the product, not just remake it

7. After the brainstorming phase was over, the team narrowed down the hundreds of ideas by  voting  for those ideas that were not only “cool” but also easily buildable  in a short period of time. What phase of the design process is this called?

Select an Approach

8. IDEO believes that the ideas and efforts of a team or group will always be more successful than the planning of a lone genius.

9. Once the ideas were narrowed down and divided into categories, the group was split into four smaller teams. What phase(s) of the design process was each of these groups responsible for?

Model or Prototype

10. The leaders at IDEO believe that  good  behavior and a  fun   environment are two important reasons why their employees are able to think quickly and creatively to produce innovative results.

11. Sometimes, people come up with great solutions that work by trying their ideas first, and asking for  Permission later.

12. Design is often a process of going too far and having to take a few steps back. What phase of the design process would the critique of the four mock-ups come under?

Test and Evaluate

13. Upon critique of the four teams’ models, it was obvious that none of the teams had developed an optimum solution. However, the people at IDEO believe that it is important to fail  often in order to  succeed_ sooner.

14. What percentage of the entire week’s time did it take to fabricate the final prototype?

40%

15. Instead of showering his design team with a tremendous amount of praise, what did the boss require his employees to do with their new design?

Go to show the shop owner what their new design was

16. Of all the things that we are surrounded by every day, what has not been placed through the design process

 the air

Conclusion

1. What did you find to be the most impressive part of the team’s effort?

That they were able to complete the cart in only five days

2. What advantages are there to having a design team with members that have non-engineering backgrounds?

You get people with different perspective who then come up with one idea that is the best

3. There was a point in the process where a self-appointed group of adults stepped up, stopped the ideas, and redirected the group to break up into teams. Why was this done?

So that they will have many different ideas and have for main prototypes to get their design from.

4. At the end of the video, Dave Kelly states, “Look around. The only things that are not designed are the things we find in nature.” Can you think of anything that would contradict this statement?

evolution because you have to get the best of the best in life

-Your egg didn't break in any way! (awarded three times)
-Your egg didn't break in any way! (awarded three times)
-Your egg didn't break in any way! (awarded three times)

5) What designs from your class did well? Based on the achievements you earned, how would you redesign your solution to score better? Be specific (sketches with labeling work well for this).

  • Stanley's Design really shined in my eye because of how creative it was and how well it work
  • A better way to design our solution would be to add more padding and get rid of the parachute to increase the accuracy

Assembly Quiz

Glider Challenge

1) What's the challenge?
  • The challenge is to make a glider that can fly far and stay in the air the longest
2) Brainstorm solutions
  • Our ideas was to make a big glider with just a triangle shape with support beams going across the giant beam
  • the wingspan has to be great so that it is in the air for a long time and that it can catch enough air so that it can fly far enough
  • The next one was the one after the first one broke we cut down the sides and made a rectangle for wings
3) Specify:
  • The constraints if for it has to be made out of balsa wood and tissue paper
  • The criteria are that it has to have the best hang time and it has to fly the farthest

TED BLOG

1) What is the TED organization about?
  • The TED organization is about new technology advancements and how they affect us, this site helps to promote inovations in science
2) What is the purpose of their website and how does the functionality of their site support that?
  • their website is getting mor peopl involved in science and technology
 3) As Engineers and Problem Solvers, which topic areas (the choices from the "Show talks related to:" section on the sidebar) are of most interest to us? Justify your answer.

  • the areas that are most interesting to me is technology and science, and engineering
 4) Based on your previous answer, what are 3 talks (videos) on the site that appear like they would be of most interest to you as an Engineer/Problem Solver? Justify your choices.

  • Three talks that appear interesting are the 17 words or engineering, and how solar power helps us inovate technology, and personal robots
 6) How could you get involved in the field/technology/issue you chose to hear about? What experience/skills/training/education would you need to learn to get involved with this field?

  • To get involved in the TED organization first you need a great idea, then you have to know someone, but the most important one is your idea and what you are bringing to the table so to speak

Reverse Engineering: Functional Analysis

  • The primary purpose of this object is to provide security for anything that you need to lock up, the only thing bad is for this lock you need some sort of extention to put through the lock to secure it
  • I think that inside there are a bunch of different gears and when they are exactly lined up you are able to pull out the lock
  • The componenet that are visisble are the acutal lock, the numbers to turn it, and the metal it is made out of
  • The components that i cannot identify are how it actually works adnn what the numbers line up to to actually make it unlock

Content is King

  • One of my hobbies is listening to music, one of my favorite bands in Nirvana and AC/DC
  • Many Bands actually have blogs that tell their fans when their newest album is coming out or and where they are touring
  • I don't really see my self blogging but if i were to blog about physics, and technical building

Opt in #1

  • There are many benefits for having ads on your blog, bloggers may let ads on their side to recieve money from the corporations who run the ads
  • They get the money from the CEOs who need to get their product out in the open
  • Others may put ads on to get people more involved in something that interests the blogger
  • On the other hand pop up ads get really annoying for the person who is trying to get to the site
  • ads also help you to fill up the sides of your blog so instead of having a boring blak page you can have ads to make it more filling
  • The goal of  my blog is to share with teh rest of the class my opinions on topics we discuss
  • I don't think that ads would be a ig deal for my blog to have

Opt in Superbowl Commercial

                         2011-chevrolet-camaro-commercial

  • My favorite superbowl commercial was the new 2011 chevy Camaro
  • This commercial aired for about 1 minute for about 3 million dollars per 30 sec., so it ran for $6 million
  • A camaro starts at around $22, 680 and for the amount the ad costs they would have to sell 234 camaros and they usually
  • And for the 111 million people who watched the superbowl it would probably take no time at all to get that money back
  • I think that for a company like chevy it wouldn't really matter if they spend 6 million dollars on an ad because they would get the money back in no time

What's Going On post

  • I found this ad in a wired magazine
  • This is an ad for sprint 3G phones
  • This is probably designated for business men or women who need to keep posted on thing going on in their business
  • Andre olsen is my partner and he chose an ad for an app that helps you search for products for on your smart phone
                       Effective Graphic Design
  • This add is large an gets your attention it is delivered to more of a business person
  • The content for the ads is presented in the first sentence
  • The message is to be delivered by ads
  • the most important stuff is the biggest and then the small print is, small print
Conclusion:

1. Trends are important to see what is cool or not before you make your ad so you can profit from your ad in the modern world.
2. Human nature plays a role in this because a. they always want the best of everything and b. today everyone is texting and it is the best for people to have a phone that can keep up with them
3. The potential audience is identified when in the first sentence it describes it the speed of the phone and its capability
4. before you must find out what they are into and what are their likes and dislikes so you have the possibility of being profitable

Team Building: Survival at Sea

In this activity we had to think if we were on a boat and it was going down what fifteen items would you choose in order from top to bottom to bring with you on the life raft.
  • on my own i chose a 25 liter container of water as number 1, and a small transition radio for number 2
  • These were my choices because in order to survive you need water to drink to fuel your body, the radio i thought was important to talk to peope with but at the time i didn't know you cannot talk back to people only hear them
  • my bottom choices were army rations and fuel
  • i chose these becuase i did not know that rations were food, and thought that if you were on the ocean how could you start a fire
  • my group rate the water and ration as one and two
  • i was close with fishing net and bottle of rum
  • one big suprise that the seat cushion was no where close to the top

Tennis Ball Activity

This was a game that involved us to be split into groups and pass a tennis ball around the group the fastest

Criteria and Constraints
  • first we had  to make everyone touch the ball the fastest
  • Then everyone had to touchest the fastest but only one person could touch it at a time
  • Then game everyone had to close there eyes
  • finally we did this thing when every other person could only touch the ball
Our plan was to form a stairwell of hands and for the ball to fall down them

  • for the first one this did not work bu then the second game it worked
